Digital connectivity has become an essential form of infrastructure, and features in location planning for most industries, and increasingly households. However, as mobile data speeds increase, so the relevance of wired connections diminishes. A report by Which? this week states that the best cities for 4G availability are Middlesbrough, Sheffield and Sunderland, whereas Stoke-on-Trent has the fastest speeds. However, this may soon be irrelevant as reports suggest that network operator Three is planning to roll out ‘fixed-wireless’ coverage to 40% of the UK, which will be as fast as any existing wired connection, and not subject to the vagaries of UK weather.
