Making Your Mind Up

With reality singing show The X-Factor kicking off this week, we are perhaps reminded of one of the more important Brexit negotiations ahead – the UK’s withdrawal from the Eurovision Song Contest. Might our Eurovision fortunes change outside the EU? In the 10 years of the competition prior to our entry into the EU, we won twice and finished second five times. In the past 15 years, we have failed to do either and have placed last three times with one ‘nul points’. This year the top three entrants were all from outside the EU, and the bottom six all from within. When considering our stance on Eurovision we should heed the words of the late Sir Terry, “Who knows what hellish future lies ahead? Actually, I do, I’ve seen the rehearsals.”
