Disparities have begun to emerge in the EU members’ positions on Brexit, as the UK gears up to invoke Article 50.  The Commission has recently acknowledged that the UK has been ‘more resilient’ to the impacts of the Brexit vote than it had anticipated, but it expected inflation to impact consumer spending towards the end of this year. France is widely believed to take the strongest line on Brexit. ‘You can’t have one foot in and one foot out’ said Bruno Le Maire (Fillon’s foreign affairs advisor) However, German Foreign Minister, Sigmar Gabriel, struck a more conciliatory tone, ‘We should resist the temptation to treat Britain overly harshly, not out of pity, but in our own interest.’
